The Council of the Jewish Community of Estonia expresses deep outrage over the recent statement made by a member of the Tartu City Council concerning the Holocaust. Such remarks are extremely irresponsible, insult historical memory, and deeply hurt those for whom the tragedy of the Holocaust is not an abstract chapter of history, but part of their family fate. In a modern democratic society, such statements are unacceptable, and we strongly condemn them.
The Holocaust is one of the most tragic chapters in human history, having claimed the lives of millions of Jews and representatives of other minorities. The use of this topic for political or any other purposes is a manifestation of disrespect for the memory of the victims and for the fundamental principles of human dignity.
We are convinced that such incidents point to alarming trends in political culture. Political discourse in Estonia must be built on respect, historical responsibility, and an understanding of the boundaries of what is acceptable. A political culture that allows the tragedies of the 20th century to be used for the sake of attracting attention requires serious rethinking and change.
We call on Estonia’s state and political leaders to give a clear and straightforward assessment of such statements, as well as to initiate a serious discussion on the possibility of adopting legislation that would provide for criminal liability for denying the Holocaust and for using its theme for political or other purposes.
Freedom of speech is a fundamental value of a democratic society; however, it does not absolve one of responsibility. Where there are rights, there must also be responsibility. The use of the Holocaust for self-promotion or political PR must be stopped. The memory of the victims of the Holocaust deserves respect, dignity, and silence.
The Council of the Jewish Community of Estonia expresses its gratitude to all public and political leaders who condemned the statements made by the member of the Tartu City Council and expressed their support for the Jewish Community.
