Henri Goldstein, former chairman of the Jewish Community in Denmark, has died at the age of 77.
Goldstein served as chairman from 2019 to 2024, making him one of the longest-serving leaders of the community in recent history.
During his tenure, Goldstein guided the community through a period of significant challenges, including vandalism at cemeteries in Randers in 2019, heated debates on circumcision, and the terror attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023, which led to a marked increase in antisemitism in Denmark. Despite these pressures, he remained a visible, dedicated, and respected leader both within the community and in public life.
Goldstein’s commitment to Danish Jewish life extended far beyond his chairmanship. A lifelong member of the community, he had been actively involved since the early 1970s, holding his first position of trust in B’nei Akiva in 1970. His decades of voluntary service included articles, opinion pieces, and leadership roles, all complemented by a distinguished professional career as a physician.
Known for his integrity and dedication, Goldstein once said, “My heart has two halves. One is in Jerusalem, and the other belongs in Copenhagen.” He consistently advocated for both Danish Jews and Israel throughout his life.
Henri Goldstein passed away at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen. He will be buried in Israel.
