The municipal council of the city of Liège, Belgium, voted on a motion tabled by the far-left PTB party to end all existing or future links between Liège and Israel.
The city had no links with Israel, however, so the decision is more about showing its opinion on the matter and preventing any future links. It follows a similar decision in Barcelona, Spain, where the twinning with Tel Aviv was suspended by the mayor – councillors have since voted against it but do not have the powers to cancel it.
The vote in Liege was welcomed by the Belgo-Palestinian Association, which hopes that other cities in the country and elsewhere will follow suit, and by the PTB.
