The Coordinating Committee of Belgian Jewish Organisations (CCOJB) issued a statement condemning the attack on the Liège synagogue and calling for urgent measures to protect Belgian Jews.
“The CCOJB condemns the antisemitic attack carried out during the night from Sunday to Monday against a synagogue in Liège.
This criminal explosion is particularly violent, serious, and worrying. The CCOJB recalls attacks in the past against Jewish places of worship in Brussels, Antwerp, or Charleroi. The attack last night is part of the alarming increase in antisemitic acts committed in Belgium.
The CCOJB expresses its deep support for the Jewish community of Liège.
It firmly calls on public authorities to strengthen security measures for Jewish places of worship and Jewish institutions.
In recent years, we have heard numerous condemnations, but words alone are no longer enough. What we need today are concrete actions.
In this regard, Belgium still does not have a national strategy to combat antisemitism and promote Jewish life, as it had committed to with the European Commission, nor does it have a coordinator to properly carry out this work.
This new attack must serve as an urgent alarm signal for the authorities to move from words to action.”
