Court orders EU civil servant to perform works for Jewish organisations after antisemitic comments

A court in Brussels has handed down an unusual sentence to a Maltese civil servant at the European Commission after he made antisemitic comments.

Stefan Grech was found guilty by the court of incitement to racial hatred and violence on September 21. His three year sentence was suspended by the court on condition that he agreed to perform charitable works for an organisation working against antisemitic discrimination.

The civil servant directed antisemitic remarks against a woman in the European Quarter of Brussels in 2015 He called the woman a “dirty Jew” and threatened to kill her, adding that “Hitler should have exterminated all the Jews, just as they today are exterminating the Palestinians.”
