A centre-right MP in Belgium told the head of the country’s Consistoire, the institution providing religious services to Belgian Jews, that he had come back from « chez lui », a French term meaning from one’s own abode, following a trip to Israel.
Véronique Waroux, an MP from the centre-right Christian Democrat and Humanist Party (CdH) in the Wallonie regional legislature and a senator in the upper chamber of Belgium’s national parliament, made the remark to Philippe Markiewicz, president of the Belgian Consistore, during a debate on attempts to ban Jewish and Muslim religipus slaughter, or shechita and halal.
The family of Markiewicz, a Brussels-based lawyer, have been Belgian citizens for six generations.
