Belgian Jewish community welcomes country’s election to UN Security Council

The Coordination Committee of Belgian Jewish Organisations (CCOJB) – the country’s EJC affiliate – has welcomed the election of Belgium to the United Nations Security Council.

In a statement, the CCOJB said that they formulated such support on the basis that the country’s values of “balance, compromise and justice” can be expressed “clearly and equally in an institution which has often surprised and disappointed at the level of its credibility and its impact on world peace.”

“In particular,” the statement went on, “in regard to the State of Israel, with which the Belgian Jewish community is very attached, we hope that Belgium can, while expressing its opinions in a fair manner, reduce tensions and condemn manipulations and imbalance. Nothing should stop the criticism of any government, but the voice of the UN has often been used for the purposes of useless and counterproductive demonisation of the State of Israel – an ally – while atrocities of states which violate our most basic principles remain unsanctioned.”
