Former Chancellor Karl Nehammer received a special award from the European Jewish Congress, Keren Hayesod and the Jewish Community of Vienna (IKG).
He was presented with a “Shofar” by Ariel Muzicant, the President of the European Jewish Congress, in recognition of his unwavering support for the Jewish community and his steadfast commitment to the defence of the State of Israel.
Muzicant praised Nehammer’s leadership, saying, “Karl Nehammer has shown exceptional dedication not only to Austria’s Jewish community but also to the broader cause of peace and security for Israel. His advocacy for the Jewish people, especially in the face of rising antisemitism, has been an inspiration to us all.”
Around 400 guests attended the event, marking a significant occasion in the heart of Vienna.
“I am deeply moved,” Nehammer said, visibly touched by the recognition.
The parents of the recently released hostage, Tal Shoham, made a surprise visit to Vienna to see the former Chancellor. “This is an incredible honour. And that Gilad and Nitza Korngold came to Vienna for this really touched me,” said Nehammer.
“The way Hamas is operating here is extremely inhumane and should be condemned. It clearly shows that this is a terrorist organisation!” Nehammer stated.
Nehammer shared that everything had been done to free Tal Shoham from the clutches of Hamas, adding, “But it is still the case that another 59 hostages are in the hands of the terrorist organisation Hamas.”
Shoham’s ordeal ended after 505 days of captivity, but the other hostages are still enduring unimaginable conditions. “We will not relent until all hostages are freed,” Nehammer emphasised.
