Israel Votes for Peace – Europe Must Now Pressure Palestinians to do the Same

The European Jewish Congress congratulates the Israeli people for giving a clear mandate for peace to the next Israeli government, yet calls on European leaders to now exert pressure on the newly-formed Palestinian government to renounce terrorism and violence.

While yesterday’s election results will enable acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to form a coalition committed to pursuing an end to conflict, the Palestinian government led by Hamas rejects the existence of the State of Israel.

The President of the European Jewish Congress Pierre Besnainou calls on the European Union to use its healthy relations with the Palestinian Authority to demand that real efforts are made towards a peaceful, negotiated resolution of the Middle-East conflict.
