EJC strongly supports Lisbon’s Jewish Community call to end antisemitism trivialisation in Portugal

(Wednesday, September 7, 2022)- The European Jewish Congress (EJC) strongly supports Lisbon’s Jewish Community calls to end antisemitism trivialisation and the spread of conspiracy theories in the country’s public debate.

At the EJC, we join the efforts of the Jewish Community of Lisbon in demanding a serene and constructive debate around the Portuguese Nationality Law and its regulations, insisting that the specificities of the legislative process cannot be tramped with unfounded antisemitism accusations.

The Government of Portugal has been a great ally of the Jewish Community. The adoption of the IHRA working definition of antisemitism and the pledge to present a National Strategy to Combat Antisemitism by the end of this year are proof of Portuguese authorities’ commitment to the struggle against Jewish-hatred.
