EJC President Kantor welcomes US administration recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and calls on European states to follow suit

(Brussels, Wednesday, December 6, 2017) – EJC President Dr. Moshe Kantor has welcomed the decision by the US administration to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel.

“This recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel is important, and we hope that European states will follow suit” Dr. Kantor said. “David Ben Gurion proclaimed Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel nearly seventy years ago, but Jerusalem has been the capital of the Jewish People for millennia and a cornerstone of Jewish identity. Under Israeli rule, Jerusalem is a city where people are welcome regardless of their faith, where holy places are protected and honoured, and where democratic freedoms are guaranteed.”

“This new US policy asserts that rejectionism will be met with recognition and it can serve to embolden peace as it stands in opposition to attempts to erase the Jewish presence in Jerusalem, such as the recent disgraceful resolutions by UNESCO.”
