EJC laments the passing of European Parliament President David Sassoli

(Brussels, January 11, 2021) The European Jewish Congress laments the passing of European Parliament President David Maria Sassoli.

“David Sassoli was a man of principle, depth and passion, a committed European, and a friend of the Jewish people”, said EJC President Dr. Moshe Kantor.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends for their tragic loss. He will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace,” Dr. Kantor added.

Mr. Sassoli, who served as Member of the European Parliament since 2009 and as President of the EU’s directly-elected institution since 2019, passed away aged 65, just days before the end of his term as president.

In 2020, he attended the Fifth World Holocaust Forum in Jerusalem, alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel.
