EJC expresses outrage over antisemitic imagery applied to Hungarian Jewish leader

(Monday, December 3, 2018) – The European Jewish Congress (EJC) has expressed outrage after the Hungarian weekly magazine, Figyelő , depicted András Heisler, head of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (MASZIHISZ) on its recent cover surrounded by banknotes.

“There is absolutely no excuse for using such vile antisemitic imagery, which has a long and sordid past”, Dr. Moshe Kantor, President of the EJC, said. “The blatant stereotypical association of Jews with money sends a violent message directed at the Jewish community and constitutes incitement. The editors of the magazine should apologize for this depiction and retract it where possible.”

“The EJC expresses its full support and solidarity with Mazsihisz and with Andras Heisler who also serves as Vice-President of both the European Jewish Congress and the World Jewish Congress. This is deeply shocking, especially coming just a few days after a CNN poll on antisemitism in Europe showed that antisemitic tropes about the influence of Jews are still common in Europe,” Dr. Kantor added. “This is an attack against all Jews”.
