The European Jewish Congress conveys its sincere condolences to the families of Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser whose bodies were returned to Israel on July 16, 2008.
Sergeant First Class (res.) Eldad Regev and Staff Sergeant (res.) Ehud Goldwasser were kidnapped two years ago in a cross-border raid by the Lebanese terrorist organization Hizballah. They were laid to rest on July 17, 2008 in Haifa’s military cemetery.
Furthermore, the EJC strongly condemns the participation of Lebanese President Michel Suleiman in the jubilant celebrations held to welcome terrorist Samir Kuntar’s return to Lebanon on the day of the prisoners’ swap.
EJC’s President Moshe Kantor declared: “We deplore the hypocritical stance of the Lebanese President, who just a couple of days ago preached unity and international cooperation at the launch of the Union for the Mediterranean in Paris. His support of Kuntar can only be viewed as condoning terrorism and more worrisome, a vote of confidence in Hizballah’s murderous actions.
The spirit of hopeful understanding voiced at the Union of the Mediterranean should not be flouted by stating one attitude when in the West and another when in the Middle East. It is imperative that all of the members of the Union for the Mediterranean jointly condemn acts of terror- both past and present- in all of their forms.”
