The European Jewish Congress condemns the behaviour of supporters of an Italian football team on Sunday, October 22. Supporters of S.S. Lazio defaced Rome’s Olympic Stadium following a football match with antisemitic stickers and graffiti, including a sticker insulting the memory of Anne Frank.
“The content of the stickers and slogans placed at the Olympic Stadium is not only repugnant, it is an offence to the victims of the Holocaust and an affront to the values of fair play and mutual respect, which are fundamental to football”, stated EJC President Dr Moshe Kantor in a letter to the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) President Carlo Tavecchio. “We must do our utmost to stamp out the twin spectres of antisemitism and racism which are a stain on this beautiful game.”
In the same letter, Dr Kantor commended the recent decision by the FIGC to work together with the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI) to educate football supporters about the scourge of antisemitism and to cultivate the memory of the Holocaust.
