Spanish Senate and University Host Holocaust Memorial Day Ceremonies

The EJC President Pierre Besnainou and the EJC Executive were in Madrid to attend the various events organised in the framework of the Official Holocaust Remembrance Ceremonies.

A concert of Sephardic liturgical music was organised in the Spanish Senate, in the presence of the Speaker of the Senate Javier Rojo, along with numerous representatives of Spanish Jewish Communities, Chief Rabbi René-Samuel Sirat from France and twelve Holocaust survivors originating from Mediterranean countries.

The EJC delegation also attended a ceremony organised at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, presided and addressed by the Spanish Minister of Justice Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar and the Spanish Minister of Education Mercedes Cabrera Calvo-Sotelo, as well as by the President of the Spanish Jewish Community, Jacobo Israel Garzon, and by Juan de Dios Ramirez Heredia, former MEP and President of the World Romany Union.

The ceremony ended with a symbolic lightening of six candles accompanied by liturgical songs and a prayer in remembrance of the victims.
