The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the establishment of a European Institute on Tolerance and Security in one of the leading existing EU research and educational centres. This institute will be the first European centre to link the concepts of tolerance and security and to provide a contemporary definition of the concept of tolerance which will include an equilibrium of rights and obligations towards modern societies. President Barroso has reacted with a lot of enthusiasm to the idea and provided the ECTR with the support and patronage of the European Commission for the project.
