The European Jewish Congress (EJC) partnered with the European Commission, the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU, and the Croatian Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) in the organisation of the Holocaust Remembrance Conference “Remembering the past, Shaping the Future” that took place in Brussels on the 23 of January 2024 on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The conference was organised in partnership with Jewish organisations such as the AJC Transatlantic Institute, B’nai B’rith Europe, B’nai B’rith International, European Jewish Community Center, European Union of Jewish Students, and World Jewish Congress.
Among the speakers were Vice-President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas, European Commission Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism and Fostering Jewish Life Katharina von Schnurbein, Secretary of State for Gender Equality, Equal Opportunities and Diversity of Belgium Marie-Colline Leroy, Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan, Vice-President of WGAS MEP Sergey Lagodinsky and Co-Chairs of the Croatian Presidency of the IHRA Sara Lustig and Ambassador Terezija Grass.
Participants had the opportunity to hear a testimony from Holocaust Survivor Regina Sluszny.
The conference concluded with a panel discussion about the need to safeguard Holocaust sites featuring President of the Luxembourg Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah Laurent Moyse, Chair of the IHRA Museum and Memorials Working Group Simonetta Della Seta, and Chair of the IHRA Project Monitoring Access to Holocaust Collections Veerle Vanden Daelen.
