EJC attends a ceremony in Brussels to honour three resistants

EJC Public Affairs Officer, Caroline Totaro took part in a ceremony held in honour of Youra Livschitz, Jean Franklemon and Robert Maistriau, three young resistants who on 19 April 1943 attacked the train of the 20th convoy carrying 1,631 Jews from the Dossin barracks in Mechelen, Belgium, to Auschwitz near Boortmeerbeek. They managed to free 17 women and men from one wagon and further along the route, other people managed to escape.

In honour of these three heroes and in response to a request from the citizens of Uccle, the City of Brussels has decided to symbolically rename three paths through the Bois de la Cambre.

Simon Gronowski who survived the Holocaust by escaping convoy No. 20 which would have taken him to Auschwitz also shared his touching story during the ceremony.
