(Brussels, November 22, 2023) – The European Jewish Congress welcomes the agreement today by the Israeli government which will enable the release of 30 Israeli children and 20 Israeli women held captive by the Hamas terror group in Gaza.
On October 7, these hostages were dragged into Gaza by Hamas amid horrific brutality alongside around another 200 others.
We reiterate that it was this act, together with a breach of the existing ceasefire agreement by Hamas and the murder of 1,200 Israeli citizens on that day that led to the current military conflict.
While we share the immense relief of those released and their families, our thoughts go out at this time to those Israeli and foreign hostages remaining in the tunnels of Gaza. We will not rest until all our brothers and sisters are released.
We are grateful for the involvement of the international community, including in Europe, leading to the release in the coming days of these hostages.
We recognise that the value of human life is always paramount and that restoring these hostages to the safety of their families requires difficult decisions including the release of terrorists and we hope and pray that this is but the first stage leading to the release of all hostages and the removal of the Hamas terror threat to Israel.
